What are the Different Types of Coffee?

Coffee has been part of most people’s daily lives. It is a drink that keeps us awake and energetic especially when we have a lot of tasks to do. There are also some people who cannot function well unless after drinking a cup of coffee. If you consider yourself a coffee lover, how many types of coffee have you tried?

If you haven’t tried other types of coffee aside from the common ones, maybe it’s time for you to discover the many types of coffee that exists. Did you know that there are many coffee drinks out there that are waiting for you to be enjoyed? To feed your curiosity, here’s a compilation of the different types of coffee.

Coffee Beans

Before we go to the coffee drinks, let us first know the different types of coffee species which are divided in two: Arabica and Robusta.

  • Arabica: Majority of the coffee we buy and drink in the present time are from Arabica beans.
  • Robusta: Robusta beans are much stronger and bitter compared to Arabica. This coffee species is commonly used to make espressos and are perfect for those who love to drink strong coffee.

What makes certain coffee types differ from one another is in the way that they are brewed and becomes a drink. This gives coffee some of the most unique flavors. To further know about this, here are the different types of coffee drinks.

Antoccino

This is a variation of the traditional cappuccino. It is composed of a single shot of espresso and hot milk in a 1:1 ratio.

Black Coffee

This coffee drink is served straight from the carafe after brewing. There are no added ingredients to it which can alter the flavor.

Black Tie

This coffee drink is composed of a double shot of espresso combined with traditional Thai iced coffee and sweetened condensed milk.

Breve

This is a combination of espresso, cream, and milk. Half of the drink is espresso, while the other half is varying amounts of milk and cream.

Ca Phe Sua Da

This coffee drink originated in Vietnam and it means iced milk coffee. It is a mixture of black coffee and a quarter to half sweetened condensed milk poured over ice.

Caffé Americano

This is an espresso drink with added water. It has a similar strength with a regular drip coffee but they differ in taste.

Café Au Lait

This is a French term for coffee with milk. It is an espresso shot with hot milk in a 1:1 ratio.

Café Bombon

This coffee drink originated in Spain. It is generally served in a glass. A shot of espresso is added with sweetened condensed milk in a 1:1 ratio. The milk is gradually added making it settle on the bottom part of the glass creating an aesthetically pleasing separation bands.

Caffé Crema

This is basically an espresso shot but it is topped with foam. The coffee used in this drink is course grounded coffee which ensures that the coffee is not over-extracted. The foam on top is generated due to long pull brewing which is about 20 to 30 seconds. This coffee drink is being served in Switzerland, Austria, and northern Italy since the 1980’s.

Café Cubano

This coffee drink is from Cuba and it is also known as Cuban coffee. It is an espresso with an added demerara sugar while brewing which makes the drink sweet.

Café Zorro

This coffee drink is composed of a double espresso shot with hot water added to it in a 1:1 ratio.

Caffee Gommosa

This coffee drink is an espresso poured over a single marshmallow.

Capuccino

This is known as the king of coffee-based beverages. It is a shot or two of espresso added with milk and topped with foamed milk. It has a smooth texture and a rich coffee flavor.

Chai Latte

This coffee drink is an espresso mixed with spiced tea and steamed milk.

Cold Brew Coffee

This coffee drink is brewed using cold water. A long period of time is used to finish brewing this cold coffee drink.

Cortado

In Spanish, cortado means cutting. It is made from espresso and a little amount of steamed milk to reduce the acidity.

Doppio

This coffee drink is a double shot that is extracted simultaneously using double coffee filters. It is served in a demitasse cup. Modern houses like Costa prepared coffee this way.

Drip Coffee

The coffee for this drink is brewed by placing it into a paper filter. A hot water is then poured onto it allowing it to drip into the carafe below.

Egg Coffee

This is a Vietnamese coffee drink composed of egg yolks, condensed milk, sugar, and Robusta coffee.

Eiskaffee

This is a German coffee drink that is made with iced coffee and vanilla ice cream.

Espressino

This is a coffee drink made from espresso, cocoa powder, and steamed milk.

Different Types of Coffee

Espresso

This coffee drink is something we’re all familiar with. It is made by forcing a very small amount of very hot water through finely ground coffee beans. This way, we get a rich concentration of coffee in liquid form.

Espresso Con Panna

This is a coffee drink made with whipped cream.

Espresso Romano

This drink is a shot of espresso served with a slice of lemon. Though it’s named Espresso Romano, it does not have anything to do with Romans.

Flat White

A flat white coffee is made with microfoam. It is steamed milk with a small amount of foam over espresso. There is no specific ratio on the number of shots and the amount of milk used but the coffee content is always greater than the milk content. It also has a different texture compared to cappuccino.

French Press Coffee

This coffee drink is made with a French press brewer which used a plunger to press the coffee. This separates the finished drink from the coffee grounds.

Galão

This is a hot Portugese drink made with espresso and foamed milk with the ratio 1:3. It’s very similar to Caffe Latte.

Guillermo

This coffee drink is a variation of Espresso Romano. It is made by pouring a shot of espresso over slices of lime.

Iced Coffee

This coffee drink is slightly different from cold brew. It is made using a hot brew method, then cooled with ice before serving.

Irish Coffee

In this drink, coffee is combined with whiskey and cream. It is sometimes sweetened using sugar.

Kopi Susu

This coffee drink is made with sweetened condensed milk which is allowed to cool making the grounds sink to the bottom of the glass.

Caffe Latte

The term Caffe Latte is Italian which means milk coffee. It is a combination of an espresso shot and steamed milk in a 1:3 ratios. It is also topped with foam just like cappuccino.

Liqueur Coffee

This coffee drink is brewed using a 25ml shot of liqueur. It is also sometimes served with cream.

Ristretto

This coffee drink is an espresso made with the same amount of coffee but half the amount of water.

Lungo

Oppisite the Ristretto, this coffee drink is made with more water than the amount of coffee.

Macchiato

This drink is an espresso shot with a very small amount of foamed milk. It has a strong aroma and intense flavor of coffee. Some also adds a pinch of cocoa to this drink.

Mochaccino

This coffee drink is basically Cappuccino with an added chocolate flavoring.

Moka

The coffee for this drink is brewed using a moka pot. The water passes through the coffee using pressurized steam.

Percolated Coffee

The coffee for this drink is brewed by cycling hot water through the coffee grounds using gravity to reach the desired strength.

Turkish Coffee

This is a traditional coffee drink in the Middle East. The fine ground coffee is immersed in water to allow it to form foam into a maximum amount.

Vacuum Coffee

In this type of coffee, two chambers are used to brew it. The vapor pressure and vacuum produce the final cup of coffee.

Vienna Coffee

This drink is made of coffee or espresso added with whipped cream and sometimes with milk.
